According to The Sun, “Justin Timberlake will make a surprise appearance at London’s Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium this Saturday.”
Umm, guys? It’s not really a surprise appearance if you are announcing it in advance
Justin will be on stage with Timbaland and Duran Duran before heading over to his own gig that same night.
There’s a somewhat passive-aggressive review of London’s UK show in The Evening Standard, but they are dead-on accurate when it comes to the scrims that are used during Justin’s FutureSex/LoveShow tour.
Sometimes though, it all went awry. The setting hardly helped. Performing in the round was always going to cause sound difficulties, but the promised visual coup was ruined by sheets of what appeared to be net curtain, similar to that found in Tyneside council houses.
They descended intermittently and were too see-through to display the projections properly, but too dense to avoid making every seat in the arena a restricted view. Indeed, when Timberlake sang the confessional ballad Losing My Way encircled by the stuff and its lyric asked, “can anybody out there see me?”, the resounding answer was “not really, no”.
I’ve seen FutureSex/LoveShow in Boston, Chicago and Manchester, NH and I have to say that the negative impact of the scrims can be mitigated a lot depending on where you are sitting. In Chicago we were face-on and that was horrible. All I did all concert was bitch and moan with a friend of mine about it. And send lots of text messages to other friends. But in both Boston and Manchester I had a side-view in the lower-levels and it was a much better experience. Still, I really hope he rethinks doing in-the-round staging for any future tours.
None of this is stopping me however from seeing him again in August. Only a few more weeks and Justin will be before my very eyes once again!
